Component 1B
Knowing and Valuing Students
Allows teachers to understand and honor students for their differences and identities which includes, gender, ethnicities, religion, and their cultural background. Teachers need to spend time with their students individually to learn what their lives are like outside of school and ask about their wellbeing to ultimately help their learning and development.

Component 1b exemplifies three elements, Respect for Student’s identities, Understanding of Students’ Current Knowledge and Skills, Knowledge of Whole Child Development, Knowledge of the Learning Process, and Learning Difference. Teachers can offer a couple times a week to have lunch in their classroom with students, so that teachers can get to know their students personally. It can help you understand them as learners, as well as allowing them to be more comfortable with the teacher.
