Formative Assessments
Formative assessments monitor student learning during the learning process of classroom material. This allows instructors to receive ongoing feedback from different assignments and activities. This is beneficial because it allows instructors to see if their teaching styles needs to be improved, or if the students are understanding and retaining the concepts.
Examples of formative assessments in the classroom include games and activities such as Kahoot, Quizlet, Blooket, Flip, Edpuzzle, Google Forms, etc. Formative assessments are not always technology based, students can share with a partner, answer questions from the teacher, or work on paper class assignments.
Flipgrid
Flipgrid is a video-based technology tool that allows students to have discussions on the questions posted by teachers. Teachers can post questions called "topics," and students can record video responses that appear in the Flipgrid classroom. Flipgrid is easy to use and allows students to create thorough responses. However, the video feature can easily distract students from the purpose of the assignment.
Edpuzzle
Edpuzzle allows instructors to select a video and customize it by editing, cropping, recording audio, or adding different types of questions including multiple choice and short response questions. Can be used for teachers to monitor and grade students on whether or not they were engaged in the videos. Edpuzzle is a great example of how teachers can use flip classrooms for different content.
Google Forms
Google Forms are used to create quizzes and assessments that teachers can easily incorporate into their Google Classroom. Google Forms offers a variety of question types educators can use to formulate their quizzes, and use settings to customize and insert pictures into their form. Google Forms are an easy tool to create online assessments with, and they give immediate feedback to the teacher. Students can also receive immediate feedback after submission of their assessment.
Blooket
Blooket is a game-based learning platform that allows teachers to check for understanding from students while engaging students in the immersive activities. Blooket has a variety of games to choose from, and the games make learning fun and competitive with students in the classroom. However, students might rush their answers so that they can receive as many points as possible, and not actually retain the information.
Formative assessments are great to use in the classroom, because they help students identify their strengths and weaknesses on classroom material. Formative Assessments relate to the Danielson Framework of Teaching, specifically Domain 1, Component 1F. Teachers are planning coherent formative assessments to observe student progress, and make changes in instruction styles if needed. It also allows students to be supported in their own learning.
